We got to the finish having cleared everything and on time so another Lands End medal will be on the way.

Then on the way home there was a bang from the rear end. Stopped to investigate and thought we had blown a driveshaft oil seal. Further investigation showed a large hole in the top of the gearbox. No idea what has broken inside to make the hole as we drove all the way home with no problem. Will investigate further when time allows.

We took the easy option at Bluehills and followed our class o route instead of risking the main trial route and breaking something on the last hill. It'4 the drivers choice but the navigator made the right decision for me.

We went back to Bluehills after we finished and even the trials specials in class 7 and 8 were struggling.

Great meal last night we went out with the MGCC midland centre members to a pub in Perranporth for beers and steak. Just had breakfast, walking on the beach, quick look in the Perranpoth shops then home.

Cardinham woods

The sections were evil. They had mud,rocks, deviations and restarts. But we cleared them all.

The Lady Vale restart had been set so you had to turn in and turn out. By pure luck we were travelling sideways on arrival nicely lined up for a straight exit.

Mays was long rocky and slippy and just when you thought it was over it did a 90 right and climbed even steeper. Had to lift off to get any steering at the 90 right but managed to keep enough power on to get up the climb out and span the wheels all tge way to the top.

Silver lead mine had a ledftrightleft half way up the climb which I wasn't expecting and neither Lauren or I know how we got round it but we did. The hairpin was badly rutted on the inside so we went wide and found some grip and some level ground.

Just done the bishops path special test and in the queue for Bishops Wood.

We are waiting for the first section in Cardinham woods. It's very wet and muddy but under it all there is some stone.

Petherwin old hill proved we shoukld never listen to marshalls. The start marshall said not to bother dropping tyre pressures as there was plenty of grip and no one els had. Well there was no grip at all for the steepest part on 26psi but somehow the skoda bounced on up with the wheels spinning.

Ruses mill was late opening so we arrived to a queue. When we did get going it was full throttle wioth a lift off to get some turn in at each of the 4 hairpins. Made a last minute decision to stay low in the restart box and it paid off as we found some grip and got away before the camber of the corner set the wheels spinning.

Molland rise was easy today,wet but plenty of grip. Wargery was horrible, very slippery and badly washed out. We went sideways up the hill scraping the sump guard all the way.

Well the Skoda Blog email address has been hijacked by spammers. That means that live email posts from events may be a bit difficult in the future, but I will see what I can do.

No I am not being rude or racist. The hill is called Black Harry and thats a Skoda going up it in front of us. We made it to the top with some major crashing and banging of rocks on the floor and sump guard.

And we probably have an award! We will have to wait for the official results but at the moment it looks like we have an award. We cleared everything, but we were late finishing. The travelling marshall who was supposed to finish 3 minutes in front of us finished about 40 minutes behind us so the timings will probably be reviewed and as we were only about 7 minutes late we should get a medal.

Excelsior was hilarious, Lauren really doesn't like hills that bang on the floor and we came off of the rock slab with both front wheels in the air. Earlier Black Harry had done a great job of trying to smash the sump, but the sumpguard did its job. Must have a look in the morning and see how much damage was sustained.

Safely home now having come back as far as Tamworth in a convoy of 2 Estelles. People kept looking at us. I suppose its like buses, you don't see an estelle for years and then two come along

First section was a case of picking the right line off of the start. We went left as it was very cut up on the right and it paid off.

Lauren and I were out on the MGCC Autumn Trial last weekend. We double drove, so the Skoda did 48 competitive runs in the day and everything held up. I finished on 83 points, the winner scored 22. That put me about half way down the field. It was very dry and there was plenty of grip, but the Weber carb was suffering from fuel frothing and we kept losing power on the steeper hills. Evidently a Weber won't run at angles steeper than 22 degrees without frothing its fuel and dying. Recommended solution is a Nikki carb, trying to find one to fit.

Next weekend is the Edinburgh, we start at 5:50 am on Saturday, penultimate car in Class O so we will need to keep moving. Did the spanner check today as I won't get much chance in the week. Found a hose that had split by the jubilee clip so that has had to be 'circumcised'. Will try to get a replacement but don't hold out much hope as it has 3 bends in two planes!

Been to the cyder farm this morning. It is owned by Donald Healy's grandson. Didn't realise until I read the display that Donald Healy was born in Perranporth and owned the first garage in the town.

Stocked up on Strawberry and chilli jam and bought some cyder to try later. Had a tour of the manufacturing process and visited the bonded warehouse where they keep their apple brandy and are maturing the first ever batch of Cornish whiskey.

Not sure what is happening this afternoon as it is now a bit grey and muggy. The girls were going to walk to Bluehills but have changed their minds now. I am going to walk down and see what the surf is like and maybe go in if it is any good.

We went to the beach about 11 and we came back about 4:30. The surf was great at low tide with Perranporth producing its consistent waves and the off shore wind keeping them stood up.

I went in 3 times and caught some great waves. Lauren and Lois came in with me late afternoon and the waves were so strong we broke a board!

Andy has been sleeping in the flat all day and is full of energy now wanting a walk. The girls are on a campaign to eat out so I suppose we will. Pretty sure there will be a spectacular sunset as it is still clear and sunny. So we will be back on the beach later.

Disappointing end to the day

We didn't even manage to get to the start of bluehills! A big rock step had developed about 10 metres up from the gate and we just couldn't get up it. We had enough power until the sills and jacking points bottomed out on the edge of the step.

Went from widemouth south throgh oozes water which we cleared and onto the breakfast stop. Struggled with the restart on ruses mill but eventually found some grip by wiggling the steering. Just cleared the three hills in the woods at cardinham. The right hander on mays is scarey, lift off and you fail, keep it nailed and you bounce off the bank. Managed to get just between the two. On now to perranporth and blue hills.............

Away from roundswell on time. First section was very wet and muddy, but we cleared it. The special test role back at the restart was steep but we got away from it. Barton steep was a disaster missed first gear in the restart box but might get away with it. Molland rise start had moved round the hairpin we bounced in the big hole at the beginning and then steamed to the top.

Well the Skoda is ready to go after an uneventful trip down here. Got lost round Shaftsbury as the road was closed and the sat nav overidden by the driver. We plan to get a good nights sleep tonight in preparation for the big day. We start at 12:37 am saturday from bridgwater and should be finishing around 5:00 on saturday afternoon if all goes well. Well the brakes are not going as planned. Removal of the shoes revealed that the offside cylinder was leaking so I ordered a new one from Jorily. That arrived and I put it on. Went to bleed the brakes to discover that the nearside burtst its seals with the increased pressure now the offside wasn't leaking! So another new cylinder has been ordered and once it arrives I'll get it on and get an MOT. Lets hope the front callipers are OK.

Started to put the rear shoes on only to find that one of the wheel cylinders has a leak. So more parts ordered from Jorily and a slight delay before we put the whole lot together and get an MOT.

Serviced her today and fitted new brake pads. Borrowed the lift in Andy's workshop and he gave me a hand. Seemed like a nostalgia trip for him back to when he was rallying his SkodaFord. Had a quick look at the rear brakes and as a result have ordered new shoes from Jorily this evening.

Andy was telling me that the SkodaFord was so reliable when rallying that often all they had to do in service was adjust the rear brakes. Eventually he cured this by fitting rear disks using disks and calipers the same as the front ones so they only had to carry one lot of spares in the van.

Gradually getting set up for the Exeter at the weekend. Bit of a panic this afternoon as the Saffie hasn't been used since we got back from the Hardy and I went out to start her up and warm her through incase anything didn't work before we set off. ran the engine for a couple of minutes and noticed fuel dripping from the carb onto the exhaust manifold! A brief investigation showed a fuel pipe leaking where it had split at it's join with the carb. Stanley knife and screwdriver soon had it repaired and we are up and running without the dramatic smoke of petrol dripping onto a hot exhaust.

Our start time is 2:07 am on Saturday and we are the penultimate car on the road in Class 0. As usual we will post some pictures from the mobile as we travel.

The experts have come back, 39 on the crownwheel and 10 on the pinion makes it a 3.9 diff ratio and I need to find an Estelle 120 5 speed to get a 4.22 diff. This will lower the top speed, which is no problem in a trials car, and lower all the gear ratios making it possible to climb the hills with my 58 bhp.

I've also now got detailed instructions on how to raise the suspension, which requires some machining and engineering. I have entered the Exeter trial in Class 0, so we don't need to get the work done until after that. I am looking for a gearbox and engineering facilities, will probably end up in the workshop at Cornermotorsports borrowing Andy's ramp and Skoda expertise.

The Hardy Trial

Well Lauren and I did The Hardy Trial last weekend. It was quite an experience for us. I did the Ilkley last year in Class 4, but the Ilkley was much easier. Someone has to come last, and I think it was us. We had an awful day, but we finished and got home safely, even if we were a bit fed up. Expert opinion says we either don't have enough power or the gearing is to high so I have been out today counting the teeth on the crownwheel, there are 39. I am waiting for 'The Experts' response on the Skoda forum so we can find out what ratio diff we have and then decide if we need to take the gearbox out and change the diff or take the engine out and find more power.

More news when we have it.

Well Burton Dasset went well. Lauren was excellent, scoring 173 points at the end of the day. My score was 141, remember the fewer the points the better your score! The maximum score would have been 336. We both cleared a couple of sections and Lauren beat me on one section.

Just had the final instructions for The MG Car Club Autumn Trial on 28th. Lauren and I are both driving, so the Skoda will get a thorough workout before the Edinburgh the following weekend.

We have a start time for the Edinburgh, 3:28 am from Tamworth. We have decided not to stay in Derbyshire but to drive home again on the Saturday evening as Lauren has an Operatic Society event she wants to go to on Saturday evening. Will put the in car cam in for Burton Dasset so you can all see and hear lauren and I falling out over the driving instruction.

Well the carb is back on, our entry for the Edinburgh has been accepted, we are doing class 0 again, and I have found a roll cage to go in. The roll cage is from one of Andy Corner's old rally Skodas, its a bit rusty but some hammerite and kurust will have it ready to go in.

The carb was full of crap again so I have now added another fuel filter between the electric pump and the carb. This means there is now a sedimenter pump between the tank and the mechanical pump, an inline paper filter between the mechanical pump and the electric pump and a paper filter between the electric pump and the carb. If crap appears in the carb again it must be being teleported there by aliens. the guy who dismantled and cleaned the carb said the crap looks like ash from a fire and asked if the Skoda had been burnt at any point in its life.

Our Tin Award from the Land's End has turned up. It has mine and Lauren's names on it, which is unusual for an MCC trophy, but I asked specially. I'll take a picture of it and post it on here.

Not much been happening on the Skoda front. I have the carb off again as it has been sick. Think it is the old Jethro joke "You got shit in your carburettor" " How am I gonna get up there to do that?"

We made it up to yorkshire yesterday . Had to adjust the mixture so the cold air intake must be making a difference. We will post more as we go.

Ilkley Trial

I've got an entry in the Ilkley, my first non MCC event. I've had to get a competition licence, but that was no problem. We have a start number of 70 and are running in group 4. Lauren can't make it so Mike is navigating for me and we are staying at his sister's in Harrogate the night before.

Looking forward to it.

Got the provisional results for this years Land's End in the post and Lauren and I have won a Tin Award! That means we successfully climbed all of the 12 sections we needed to and completed both of the special tests without fault. I'm chuffed to bits, once it turns up I'll take a picture and put it on here.

I believe the tin awards are made from tin mined at the Bluehills Tin Mine at the head of the Bluehills valley where the famous Old Bluhills, BlueHills 1 and Bluehills 2 sections are. It would have come engraved with just my name, but I have had a word with the officials and they say they should be able to put both our names on it.

Bluehills has been a special place for us for years, we have spectated there, we have played on the beach there, we have been to the tin mine and walked all over the valley. This year Lauren and I tried to climb Bluehills 2 in the Skoda as a non competitive section on the Land's End and we found out it is much steeper than you think. I think I possibly had too much grip as the engine stalled rather than the wheels spinning, so next year we will be climbing it competitively in Class 4 I hope and I won't run the tyres so soft.

The video we made on the Lands end is now up on youtube and I'll put it on here. It doesn't feature us blasting our way up any of the sections as we kept forgetting to switch it on. In a way I am glad that we didn't capture every section on video, it makes it that bit more special for me and Lauren, we are the only ones who will have the memories.

We had a great time, would have liked to have posted on here more but we were so busy driving and navigating. You can see the two posts we did were at rest stops! Lauren kept us on route all of the time, we did get lost after an 11 mile stretch of the A30, when I told her to have a sleep and I would wake her when we turned off. I missed the turning and we had to do 9 miles of dual carriageway to turn round and get back.
